If anyone is looking ahead to May 2011, the fares to SJU are low at the moment. I just booked BDL to SJU in early May for $274 pp rt.

We will then take the new Cape Air flight SJU to AXA ($430 pp rt). (AA is $420 and who knows if they will fly every day?)

So it cost more to get from San Juan to AXA then all the way from Boston?
Was that the best price or do you want to fly Cape Air in particular?

Yes, hartford CT to SJU is Less than SJU to AXA. Go figure!

American from SJU to AXA was $420 and arrives 2 hours later than Cape Air (at $430). We have flown Cape Air in the past from SJU to Torotla (EIS). The personal service and assistance through immigration and customs make it a great option. Like Anguilla Air Express except that they don't leave AXA at 8:00 am!

Yes, that 8:00 am departure on Anguilla Air Express is a killer! I loved the service they provided, at least on the homeward bound leg, but losing the 1/2 day in Anguilla makes me happy there's another choice.

Quidam,
What type of assistance with customs, etc does Cape Air provide? I was considering them for next year, but coming home, we had only a 1 hour and 40 minute layover in SJU and with having to go thru customs and not knowing how far it is from Cape Air's landing gate to AA's departure gate, it seemed a little tight to me.

Mitch,

If you arriving flight to SJU is on time, I believe that 1 hour 40 minutes is enough time. It's always a long walk to Immigration & Customs from any arrival. Even connecting on AA requires a lot of walking. The distance from Cape Air's arrival to an AA departure is not significantly longer.

My choice of the word 'assistance' is probably misleading. You arrive with a plane of 4-6 people rather than 50-150. You will get your bags (if checking) immediately. Cape Air crew are available for questions, directions, and assistance. It's not valet service, but many of the steps that slow you down are streamlined.

So are the Cape Air flights small planes, like under 15 people? I thought the fare of $425$ RT from AXA to San Juan was very expensive and adding that onto a fare from another airlines for travel to from the US adds up to over 800$. From a cost standpoint, I just don't see it as an advantage or even a competitor to American except that it is planning to fly everyday. Fares into SXM from the US are still around 500$; I really was hoping any airline that came into AXA would offer more then American.....better fares, better schedules. That would really help the island tourism a lot. Basically, you have to get to SJU on another airline then take Cape Air into AXA. I was hoping for something to actually make it easier and more cost effective to get here.Sad

Just remember, if it was easy to get there then there would be too many people and you probably would no longer want to go.

If you want it cost-effective, then you go through SXM instead of SJU. Of course, then you have the ferries to make it not all too easy, to stay with Lazeybob's philosophy.

Yes, Cape Air planes are small. 9 people including the pilot. If that doesn't bother you, then it's a great alternative. I prefer non-stop flights to SXM, avoiding SJU altogether. Less chance of lost luggage, cancelled or missed flights, etc.
